San Franciscans have passionate perspectives on every subject, especially their signature landmark.
Temeling or Tembeling is one of the highlights of Nusa Penida island, still off the beaten track. You will find in the same pack a primary forest, a natural pool and a very romantic place by the sea.
Tembeling Beach is a little hideaway bay at the end of a crazy motorbike ride down through the forest. Along the way you will pass by the Tembeling natural pools, you will see locals do prayers here. After the relaxing swim at the nice Tembeling natural pool you can walk to Tembeling Beach on the back.
An old-growth forest — also named primary forest, virgin forest, primeval forest— is a forest that has attained great age without significant disturbance. That’s what you’ll see in Temeling. The path down to the beach runs along a pretty deep ravine. But the trees grew from the bottom of the ravine much higher than the ravine. You are therefore totally surrounded by the forest.
At the end of the road you will see a small temple which is also a nice point of view. It is called Mujaning Temeling Temple. You will then find a recently built (in 2017) staircase. And down the stairs you will see a large natural pool surrounded by the cliff. Its around 222 steps from the temple to the natural pool, and then 67 steps from the pool to the sea.
After checking out the Tembeling Forest you can head down the spiral stairs towards the Tembeling Natural Pools. There are two but the first one is the biggest. Set nicely below the large cliff wall, the crystal clear water has a beautiful blue tone to it, which is strange considering all of the stones and cliffs around are orange and brown.
A number of traditional statues and fountains decorate this spot and are used for water ritual. You are able to swim here although the women are meant to swim in the second pool traditionally. You can cliff jump from a couple of ledges at this first pool but check the depth and debris first as things can change over time.
As known as secret beach, the view in Tembeling beach is very beautiful. You will also find another beach on the other side of the rock, passing through a cave. It is very beautiful also on the other side.
Tembeling Beach, Forest and Natural Pools are a bit of an adventure with a lot to offer as you can see. Its good to spend half a day here and you could definitely head to Banah Cliffs for sunset, which is just around the corner.
